Historia Zamku Kamieniec
History of Kamieniec Castle
First mentioned in 1348, the castle was a Royal property until 1396 when ii was bestowed to Klemens of Moskorzew as a reward for his brave defense of the Vilnus Castle. The new owners took the Kamieniecki name after the hill of Kamieniec, on which the castle is located, and one of their descendants, Mikolaj Kamieniecki (1460-1515), was nominated the first Royal Marshal. One part of the castle was sold to Seweryn Boner in 1530 while the rest went to Skotnicki family in 1601. The Skotnickis restored the roof and the water pipe system which caused a long term conflict between the two families, comically described by a famous polish comedy writer Aleksander Fredro (the later owner of Kamieniec). Troughout the ages, the castle belonged to several families and it was visited by such noble kings as Kazimierz the Great, Wladyslaw Jagiello, Jan Kazimierz, the king of Hungary Jan Zapolya. Famous people such as Mikolaj Kamieniecki, Stanislaw Szeptycki (general), Aleksander Fredro, Wincenty Pol (poet), and Stanislaw Starowieyski have been named in connection to the castle. The renowned Hungarian poet Balint Ballasy spent several months in 16 century there.
In 1995, the castle museum was funded and located in two restored chambers, Since 1998 the castle has belonged to the state and managed by the Kolder family who significantly developed the museum enriched is exhibits and restored the ruins. Thanks to His Eminence Archibishop Jozef Michalik Catholic masees are held in the ruins and approximately 40.000 people have participated from 1996 until 2000. In May 2000 the logistics division of the Polish Army, located in Rzeszow was given the name of Mikolaj Kamieniecki and 12 descendants of ex-proprietors arrived from different countries to participate in the celebrations. The Kamieniecki’s heraldic` sign of Pilava has become the division coat of arms.
